You see, growing up I thought I was what the fitness industry calls a “hard gainer”. I was skinny and not very athletic. But once I entered the workforce and after a decade of poor dieting and nutrition I had pretty much become overweight. To explain it, I conveniently switched my story and told people I was born with a “slow metabolism.”
I first started working out regularly (4-5x a week) back in 2003, and I had no clue what I was doing. I read a few Men’s Health magazines and cherry picked workouts as I pleased. I knew nothing about diet and nutrition. After 5 years of zero progress, I only got fatter.
I knew something was wrong so I then spent the next 6 years trying every single workout and diet plan out there in an attempt to get ripped: Steady State Cardio, HIIT, P90X, Insanity, CrossFit, Soul Cycle, Kickboxing, The Atkins Diet, Low Carb Diet, Slow Carb Diet, Paleo…you name it, and I’d tried it.
But still, nothing worked.
The final blow came in 2014 when my wife made the following passing comment to me:
“…for someone who works out all the time, you don’t even look that jacked…”
My wife who had been my most loyal supporter for the last 7 years of my life just destroyed me with a single sentence. As the hours went on, her comment continued to bother me. It hurt so much because it was true. I had said that exact same line to myself countless times before while looking in the mirror after a particularly intense cardio session or heavy lift. What was really going on here? Yes, I woke up every morning at 6am and worked out for an hour before going to work but it wasn’t working. I had to figure out what I was doing wrong…
When I finally stopped being lazy and really studied the science behind fitness and nutrition, I was shocked at how simple it was. I was impatient and wanted a quick fix to get lean and instead I just ended up making big mistakes the entire time.
